I must raise a point of order. I’m a lawyer Montreal, elder law attorney, passionate about the well-being of seniors. I have something important to add to my previous post titled, “Mental disorder – Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) for those whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness?” The renowned anthropologist, Margaret Mead was quoted as saying, “Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, … “We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.” I agree wholeheartedly. If that’s so, consider if you will the following.
We all think that Canada is civilized, right? However, some Canadians might not know that there’s now a debate going on about the issue of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) for those whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness. Here’s my position – Canada is a civilized society. We must give succor to those in need. Accordingly, we MUST NOT assist sufferers of mental illness to die, but instead, WE MUST HELP BY GIVING THEM TREATMENT!
